How does a SMART Board interactive whiteboard work?
The SMART Board interactive whiteboard
connects to a computer with a USB cable (older models use
a serial cable) and draws the power it needs from the computer.
The SMART Board driver automatically starts when the computer
is turned on, and the interactive whiteboard becomes active
once the driver is running.
When you connect a digital projector to your computer,
you can project the computer image onto the SMART Board
interactive whiteboard.
The SMART Board driver converts contact with the interactive
whiteboard into mouse clicks or digital ink. This feature
enables you to use your finger as a mouse or write overtop
of applications.
Do SMART Board interactive whiteboards
come with software?
Yes. Award-winning SMART Notebook
software is included. It allows you to write and edit notes,
control computer applications, write over any application
in digital ink, including moving or still video, and record
data and audio. (Windows operating systems only.)
Can I use any computer with a SMART
Board interactive whiteboard?
SMART Notebook software is required to
run the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. You can install
SMART Notebook software on any computer running Windows
98 (and later) or Mac OS 8.5 (and later) operating systems.
You’ll also need an available serial or USB connection.
For more details read the SMART Notebook system
requirements.
Which computer applications can
I use?
Any application that you use on your computer
will work on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Some
commonly used applications, such as Microsoft PowerPoint,
Excel and Word, and AutoCAD, are especially well integrated
for use with SMART Board interactive whiteboards. Depending
on the application, you can save files with notes, convert
handwriting to text or activate tools when you pick up
a pen from the SMART Pen Tray.
While any software will work on a SMART Board interactive
whiteboard, some applications are designed specifically
for use on interactive whiteboards. These applications
may feature large buttons and scroll bars for easy manipulation
and low toolbars for easy access by children or seated
users.
Can I use it with a floor stand?
Yes. SMART offers a mobile floor stand,
if needed. For more information, view our accessories.
How durable is the screen surface?
Extremely durable. The resilient hard-coated,
polyester front sheet is secured over a robust aluminum
composite backboard. The surface is tear proof, optimized
for projection, compatible with dry-erase markers and easily
cleaned. With the incredibly low return merchandize authorization
rate (RMA) of less than 0.01%, SMART Board interactive
whiteboards may be the toughest interactive whiteboards
on the market. All SMART Board interactive whiteboards
are rigorously tested, designed and produced under ISO
9001:2001 certification standards.
How do I disinfect my SMART Board
interactive whiteboard?
The cleaning instructions in your SMART
Board interactive whiteboard’s user’s guide
are adequate to handle most regular cleaning requirements.
However, if you need to disinfect your SMART Board, follow
the instructions below.
- Before you disinfect your board, shut
down or disconnect the computer
- You can use a diluted bleach solution
to disinfect your SMART Board interactive whiteboard
- Wet a clean cloth with a solution
of 10 percent bleach and 90 percent water
- Wipe the display surface, Pen Tray
and any other surfaces that you want to disinfect
- Repeat as necessary
SMART Board interactive whiteboards carry
no more or fewer germs than other public surfaces such
as door knobs or table tops. In environments where you
need to regularly disinfect surfaces, follow the procedure
above. The cleaning instructions in the user’s guide
are available for download from the SMART
Support website.
Can someone without SMART Notebook
view my notes?
Yes. There are several ways to share
notes with someone who doesn't have a SMART Board interactive
whiteboard or access to SMART Notebook software.
- You can download Notebook
interactive viewer at no charge and share files
with anyone, even those who don’t have the full
version of Notebook software
- If you're running the latest
version of Notebook software for Windows operating systems,
you can save your files as .pdf, .html or .jpg files.

library
How does the SMART Board interactive
whiteboard know which SMART Pen Tray Tool I'm using?
Optical sensors in the pen tray automatically
detect when a tool is lifted and send this information
to the computer. If you pick up the red pen, your next
contact with the surface will be in red ink. If you pick
up the eraser, you’ll erase the ink. LED lights indicate
which tool is active. If more than one tool is removed
from the tray, the last tool selected will be active.
How do I right-click without a mouse?
Simply press the right mouse button on
the SMART Pen Tray, and your next touch will be a right-click.
What makes a SMART Board interactive
whiteboard touch sensitive?
The interactive whiteboard surface consists
of two sheets of resistive material separated by a small
air gap. When you press on the interactive whiteboard you
close the air gap and thus register a contact point. This
contact point's coordinates are sent to the computer.

The projected image has inverted
colors.
- When the cable was manufactured,
the Red, Green, and Blue pins were switched causing
colors to cross over.
- A new VGA cable should correct the
distorted colors.
The projected image has a
blue, pink or green tint.
- The projector lamp needs to be replaced.
- If a new lamp does not correct the
color issue, the projector is in need of manufacturer
repair. Most projectors have a 3 year manufacturer
warranty.
No image is Projected or a "No

Only part of the image or
the message "Not supported" is displayed.
Check the PC's display resolution
doesn't exceed the supported resolution and frequency e.g.
XGA is 1024 by 768 and 60hz. To change
the PC settings:
- Windows: Right-click the desktop,
select Properties, click the Settings tab, and
select a different resolution.
- Macintosh OS 9.x: From the Apple
menu, choose Control Panels, then click Monitors
or Monitors and Sound. Select a different resolution.
- Macintosh OS X: From the Apple
menu, choose System Preferences, then click Display.
Select a different resolution.
The Image is wider at the
top/bottom of the screen.
This is called keystone and is due
to the projection angle not being perpendicular to
the screen. To correct use the projectors inbuilt keystone
function to adjust the image.
Sharp
Projectors
The digital projector's image has a strange, red tint?
The projector might be incorrectly
set to display a component video signal instead of
another kind, such as RGB or composite video. Follow
the manufacturer’s instructions to set the projector
to the type of video signal coming from your laptop
or other device. For example, on Sharp’s XG-NV6XU,
you would press the Menu button and choose Options.
Next, select Input Type and set this to Computer/RGB
or the appropriate setting for your device. Press ENTER
to finish up.
The digital projector’s
image is blank or only shows an enlarged part of
the image coming from the source computer?
The PC’s display resolution
may be set too large, such as 1,600 x 1,200 pixels.
Alternatively, the computer’s graphics drivers
may not be fully compatible with VESA (Video Electronics
Standards Association) standards.
Determine the projector’s supported resolution
using its label or users manual. Set the PC’s
video resolution to match it. For example, in Windows
XP, right-click a blank part of the Desktop and then
choose Properties. Under the Settings tab, adjust the
Screen Resolution slider. Click Apply and OK. The Settings
tab in Display Properties also holds a link to your
video card’s driver settings: the Advanced button.
Look for settings here that enable your graphics card
to send out a VESA-compliant signal. Update your drivers
and look for help on the card and/or graphics chip
manufacturer’s site, if necessary.
The digital projector’s
lamp frequently burns out and needs replacement?
The lamp may not be getting enough
airflow to cool it properly, or it may have contaminants
on its glass bulb.
Make sure that the projector’s cooling fan is
running whenever the lamp is on and don’t unplug
the unit until the fan stops. Some projectors, such
as those from Sharp, continue to run their fans for
a little while after their users turn off their lamps.
This cools the bulb so that it’s less vulnerable
to damage when it’s moved. Also, be sure to leave
ample space around the projector when it’s running
so that nothing will block its ventilation. If your
projector has an air filter, make sure that it’s
not dirty enough to impede the airflow. The filter
is intended to protect the bulb from contaminants such
as smoke and dust, although avoiding smoky or dusty
rooms altogether will help the lamp live longer. In
addition, the acidic oil from your fingers can weaken
a glass bulb, especially at high temperatures. You
can avoid touching the glass when you change the lamp
by wearing clean gloves or using a clean cloth.
A Sharp digital projector’s
remote control doesn’t work even though it
has fresh batteries and the Mouse/Adjustment switch
is correctly set to ADJ.?
The Stack setting may be incorrect.
At this writing, this applies to Sharp models XGP20XU,
XGV10WU, and XGV10XU. Set the Stack setting to Normal,
not Slave. You can do this in the Sharp Advanced Presentation
Software or using the projector’s buttons. The
Normal Stack setting should reset the infrared link
to the remote.
The image from a digital projector
appears too pink or too green.?
The projector may have an incorrect
display setting or a loose or damaged cable. Check
the projector’s settings to make sure that its
input is reading the proper type of video signal, such
as Component or RGB. If this doesn’t help, check
the video cable’s connectors on both ends for
looseness or bent pins.
